Research helps discover a top quality tomato breed

According to him, the highest yield per plant by other hybrids is only 15 kg. Pointing out that Karnataka’s average tomato productivity was only 35 tonnes a hectare, Dr. Sadashiva notes that Arka Rakshak’s yield had touched a high of 190 tonnes in a farmer’s field

Chandrappa, a farmer from Devasthanadahosalli of Chikkaballapur district, who has grown these varieties of tomatoes, has been able to get an yield of 38 tonnes from 2,000 plants on half an acre of land as against the level of 20 tonnes which he used to get from other hybrid varieties.

Selective work

There are two approaches or types of artificial selection, or selective breeding. First is the traditional “breeder’s approach” in which the breeder or experimenter applies “a known amount of selection to a single phenotypic trait” by examining the chosen trait and choosing to breed only those that exhibit higher or “extreme values” of that trait. The second is called “controlled natural selection,” which is essentially natural selection in a controlled environment. In this, the breeder does not choose which individuals being tested “survive or reproduce,” as he or she could in the traditional approach. There are also “selection experiments,” which is a third approach and these are conducted in order to determine the “strength of natural selection in the wild.” However, this is more often an observational approach as opposed to an experimental approach..

Royal breeds

A breed is a specific group of domestic animals having homogeneous appearance (homogeneous behavior, and/or other characteristics that distinguish it from other organisms of the same species. Breeds are formed through genetic isolation and either natural adaptation to the environment or selective breeding, or a combination of the two. Despite the centrality of the idea of “breeds” to animal husbandry and agriculture, no single, scientifically accepted definition of the term exists.[1] A breed is therefore not an objective or biologically verifiable classification but is instead a term of art amongst groups of breeders who share a consensus around what qualities make some members of a given species members of a nameable subset.
